Three words. FAVORITE. SHOW. EVER. Haha, just kidding! But it did just get bumped up to my number three!
I don't know about you, but I really, really, absolutely, positively LOVE shows that take place in high school. Ahh, high school... full of stereotypes, teenage drama, and more stereotypes. Or at least it is in the TV and movie world!
Ever since I was a sprout, I've always pictured high school as being a place full of—well, stereotypes, teenage drama, and more stereotypes. Boy, was I wrong. I don't know—maybe you went to a different high school, but my high school is really, really, absolutely, positively NOTHING like what I've seen on my TV. That's probably why I enjoy high school shows so much!! Okay, now let's talk about Awkward aka the best teen drama I've ever seen!!!
So like I mentioned before, Awkward takes place in a high school—more specifically, Palos Hills High School. The central character is the one and only, awkward as hell Jenna Hamilton. For a seemingly very normal, very awkward high school girl, her life is probably a hundred times more interesting than mine and probably yours. But still. Even through all the chaos and drama, there's still room for high school stuff like school dances, high school parties—Awkward covers it all. And pretty realistically at that. Very relatable but a little far-fetched that provides somewhat of a fantasy.
I have to say, the first episode kind of gave me mixed emotions about continuing the show. Why? Because it was awkward as hell... But I'm so glad I have a three episode rule because the next episodes were freaking great!! So great that the first season was capable of breaking my heart. Seriously. It broke my heart watching Jenna's relationship with Matty. I REALLY SHIP THEM!! And it kills me to NOT see them together.
But that's when it gets complicated. And nothing says "complicated" like a good old-fashioned love triangle!! And trust me when I say it was definitely a good love triangle. For a while, I didn't even know what side I wanted to be on! But after a while, of course I chose Team Matty!!!
Now, here's where it gets really complicated. Jenna and Matty? They're an on-and-off again couple which really annoys me!! I JUST WANT THEM TO BE TOGETHER SO BADLY. They're just so cute together!! Like seriously heart-breaking cute!!! But you know what's also heart-breaking?? That Awkward is on its fifth and final season!!! So it's only a matter of time before we know if they really, really do truly end up together. Let's cross our fingers and hope for the best, shall we?
But of course their relationship has to get even more complicated because well—that's Awkward for you. And this problem is definitely a big one. Sweet, awkward Jenna goes to the dark side...I was really annoyed by rebellious Jenna and you'll probably be too. I mean, she iced out all her friends and started doing drugs and hanging around a bad influence. If that doesn't annoy you, I don't know what will.
So I think that's all I have to say! I really hope you consider watching Awkward especially if you're into teen dramas like me!! The humor is great, the romance is great, the drama is great—this whole show is great!! Full of funny moments and amazing characters, I'm pretty sure each episode will leave you wanting more!!
P.S. This show censors out some words, and I really wished they didn't because it kind of interrupts the feel of the show. You feel?
Jenna Hamilton: Jenna's usually seen sporting her signature side-braid and butterfly necklace, but I personally think she's prettier with her hair out. Jenna's probably as awkward as it gets, but despite her awkwardness, she's really caring, especially when it comes to her friends. She narrates the show through her blog entries, hinting at her passion for writing. She kinda looks like Jennifer Lawrence to me (with a splash of Demi Lovato)!! Some people might not see the resemblance, but there is one thing we all should agree on—her love life is complicated af.
Matty McKibben: Matty is one of Jenna's love interests and just so happens to be very popular, very good-looking, and a slight player. He has a weird habit of sniffing his armpits when he's nervous. Like I said, weird... And it's because of that, that I wrongly thought Matty was going to be one of those stereotypical guys who were good-looking but dumb. Thank god I was wrong. He actually has some brains and he's not a complete idiot, which makes him so much better. But still, I could do without the armpit sniffing.
Tamara Kaplan: Tamara is Jenna's BFF whose goal in high school is to be popular. I really love the way she speaks. She uses a lot of slang and acronyms that she creates herself (aka Tamarisms). She's a really good friend to Jenna and she has a very loud personality. But that's one of the reasons why she's a really fun character to watch!
Jake Rosati: Jake is another one of Jenna's love interests, but he's also Matty's best friend. Awkward, right? He's very involved in school activities and is known as being the nice-guy. For a while, he goes through this "hippie" phase, which I really didn't like. But overall, Jake's pretty likable.
Sadie Saxton: Sadie has such a great personality!! And by "great" I mean abusive but fun to watch. She's the mean girl and head cheerleader at Palos Hills, making her very popular. Sadie is also super funny because she always says mean things to people and follows up with a sarcastic "you're welcome." It's funny every single time!!!
Lacey Hamilton: Lacey is Jenna's cool, hot mom. She got knocked up with Jenna when she was still in high school, so she had to give up her dream of going to college. Lacey knows next to nothing about how to raise a child, but she tries her best anyway.
Valerie Marks: Val is Jenna's school guidance counselor. And to be honest, she's terrible at her job. She's very unprofessional and knows no boundaries when counseling students.
Lissa Miller: Lissa is Sadie's best friend and a devout Christian. She's super ditsy and she's kind of an airhead—a dumb blonde, if you will.
Ming Huang: Ming is Jenna's other best friend. She has very strict Chinese parents so she's not allowed to leave the house often. She's always usually seen wearing some kind of hat.
