The Girl Who Sees Smells // Sensory Couple in a Nutshell

Show Name: The Girl Who Sees Smells / Sensory Couple (2015)
Genre: Drama, Romance, Thriller
Run: 16 episodes
Running Time: 60 minutes

Based off a webtoon of the same title, The Girl Who Sees Smells (Sensory Couple), which first starts three years prior to the two main leads, Choi Moo-Gak and Oh Cho-Rim, meeting each other. Choi Eun-Seol is the only witness who has survived the “Barcode Murders”, but fell into a coma shortly after her traumatic experience and lost her memories. Having woken up from the coma, she is able to gain the synesthetic ability to see smells but does not remember the fate of her parents or who she originally was. A retired detective who was solving the "Barcode Murders" adopts her and names her Oh Cho Rim. Choi Moo-Gak's sister, who is also named Choi Eun-Seol, was entangled in the "Barcode" murder case, resulting in not only her death, but also in the loss of most of Choi Moo-Gak's senses (analgesia).

Choi Moo-Gak's sole focus is to catch his sister’s killer. When confronting criminals, he pushes his body to the limit and ignores what harm he may be causing himself. While unearthing the cold case, Choi Moo-Gak crosses paths with Oh Cho-Rim. Although Choi Moo-Gak lost his senses and Oh Cho-Rim has had her senses heightened, they both use their abilities to find the murderer. (The original title of “Sensory Couple” was “Girl Who Sees Smells.”)

Tien's Thoughts:

My friend Terri recommended me this drama and it is really good! But one thing that irked me was that one of her eye was green/blue. The green/blue contact she was wearing was bigger than her other iris, but throughout the drama she "wears" a brown contact to cover it since she seemed like a monster in other people's eyes. But it's cool that her blue/green eye is the reason why she can see smells! I personally think the reason this drama is so addicting to watch is that there are a lot of plot twists! What I like about Sensory Couple is that it is not like those typical dramas where you know what is going to happen next. You'll get a little teary eyed here and there and maybe get a little adrenaline pumping.

Characters:

Choi Moo-Gak: Although he looks air headed on the outside, he has a lot of common sense. Through out the drama, you can't really tell what he is thinking due to being traumatized by his sisters death. After two months of no sleep and constant emotional pain of his sister's death, he faints and was clinically dead for ten days. When he wakes up he loses his sense of taste and smell which makes him become a stoic, emotionless character. Later on he meets Oh Cho-Rim and begins to develop feelings for her. After meeting Oh Cho-Rim he slowly becomes a more expressive character in the drama.

Oh Cho-Rim/Choi Eun-Seol: After running away from the murderer that she had encountered in her home, she runs away and accidentally gets hit by a car. Thus leading to her getting into a coma and waking up seeing smells. She is able to see smells as visible colors and shapes and can even trace where hidden objects are and where people have been. She has a cheerful personality and is working to become a successful comedian. She later encounters Choi Moo-Gak and uses her heightened senses to help him catch criminals. Her innocent cheerful character soon disappears as she slowly finds out about her past.

Kwon Jae-Hee/Jay Kwon Ford: An adopted Korean child who was raised in America. After his parents died, he moved back to Korea becoming a chef who is famous, intelligent, and professionally respectful. His character shows a lot of self control and is very sly. His girlfriend is a famous model who is murdered by the Barcode serial killer. Through investigation, Choi Moo-Gak and Lieutenant Yeom Mi suspect him as the murderer.

Yeom Mi: She is the daughter of a deceased policeman. Because her father was purposely killed while he was on the job, she decided to work in the area of crime and justice. She becomes the lieutenant who heads the investigation of the Barcode serial murder and recruits Choi Moo-Gak as a detective. She is quick-witted and uses her observations to catch the murderer with the help of Choi Moo-Gak, Oh Cho-Rim, and a few other detectives.
